The BJP is set to retain power in Gujarat and form government in Himachal Pradesh following weeks of campaigning. An hour after counting began, it was neck and neck between the Congress and BJP in Gujarat, but, by 10 am, the BJP bounced back with a steady lead and is now set to retain Gujarat. In Himachal Pradesh, where the government alternates between the Congress and the BJP, at 5 pm the BJP was leading in 44 of the 68 seats while the Congress was leading in 21. Four of the five exit-polls had predicted a win for the BJP. Six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has campaigned extensively in the state without much backing from the top leadership of the Congress.
